Seeing one's life as part of a chain of lifetimes where positive characteristics are strengthened and negative characteristics recognized and overcome helps provide meaning to one's life.
In this way, lessons learned and wisdom gained is not seen as something lost upon one's death but rather believed to remain with one at a soul level, able to be accessed as one progresses through our various lifetimes.
